The IRIDIUM9522B is a packaged solution for adding globally available two-way Iridium satellite communications to a remote station. Using the Iridium network to provide reliable end-to-end serial connectivity, the IRIDIUM9522B package makes it easy to connect to a remote station with Campbell Scientific's LoggerNet software.
The IRIDIUM9522B package includes all the hardware needed to get started. It consists of theIridium 9522B modem (pn 30693)with mounting hardware, aCOM9522B modem interface, the cabling needed for configuration and connection to a data logger, and an antenna with a mount. To connect the antenna to the 9522B modem, select a18017-L coaxial antenna cable. An optional surge protection kit can be ordered with a Type N to TNC antenna cable.
Typically one Iridium 9522B is placed at the LoggerNet computer and at each of the remote data logging sites.
Read MoreThe Iridium satellite network consists of 66 satellites sitting in six planes. The planes are evenly spaced flying in polar orbits at low altitudes. This configuration provides global data coverage that supports communication with a station located anywhere on earth, as long as it has a clear view of the sky. The Iridium satellite system is ideal for stations at very high-angle latitudes (greater than 70° North or South), high-altitude applications, and mobile applications, such as buoys or ships.

Model 9522B (pn 30693) used in the IRIDIUM9522B package is a satellite modem designed to operate with the Iridium network. The 9522B service support includes dial-up data, short-burst data (SBD), and RUDICS (router-based unrestricted digital internetworking connectivity solutions). LoggerNet software is used for dialing up the remote or connecting to a RUDICS server.
When attached to a device that will simply wait to be dialed up, the Iridium 9522B is compatible with any RS-232 serial device. When the remote Iridium 9522B is dialed up, generally by LoggerNet, the link is transparent and provides a high latency "serial cable replacement" type of solution. When attached to a device that will perform the dialing, such as a remote station calling back to LoggerNet, the Iridium 9522B needs to be controlled by a PC or data logger capable of sending the required AT commands through the RS-232 serial port.
When used for SBD, the Iridium 9522B must be connected to a device, such as a data logger, that is capable of sending the required AT commands through the RS-232 serial port.
LoggerNet provides support for communicating with our data loggers over the the Iridium network using the Iridium 9522B. LoggerNet provides user control by allowing direct communications with the remote station using the Iridium Dial-up or RUDICS services. LoggerNet can run unattended, providing scheduled communications for data and image collection, as well as remote station administration.
To use the Iridium satellite system, customers must select a service provider. When choosing a provider, evaluate their service while comparing costs. Most plans have a monthly base service fee for each Iridium subscriber unit (ISU), as well as charges for the amount of airtime or data used. Contact Campbell Scientific for more information about Iridium communications or assistance in locating a provider.
The COM9522B of the kit requires a desiccated, non-condensing environment; a Campbell Scientific enclosure is recommended. Grommets and screws are provided to attach the COM9522B to the backplate of our enclosures.
